The owners needed the house to work for a wheelchair user — not with add-on grab bars, but from the plan up.
The brief
Step-free access from the street to every room, bathrooms that can be rolled into, and clearances wide enough to turn.
What we did
- Built a concrete and timber ramp to a new wood deck at entry level.
- Removed interior walls for one open living, dining and workspace with wide circulation.
- Installed two roll-in showers with grab bars, handheld fixtures and a folding seat.
- Fitted a ceiling-track mobility system in the primary bedroom.
- Hung wide sliding doors throughout and laid continuous, level flooring.
- Rebuilt the laundry room with a utility sink at an accessible height, and the backyard with a pergola-covered patio on ramp access.
Result
A house the owner moves through independently — inside and out.
